Summary
[edit]DescriptionPlate showing statues of Amenhotep III at Luxor, Egypt. Commissioned by Napoleon as a present to Josephine but she rejected it. From France. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.jpg |
English: Plate showing the Colossi of Memnon, twin statues of Amenhotep III standing at the entrance of his huge but now disappeared mortuary temple at Luxor, Egypt. The 72 pieces table service depicting scenes of Egypt, made at the Sèvres manufacture, was commissioned by Napoleon I of France as a present to Josephine when he divorced her to marry Marie Louise of Austria. Josephine rejected the gift.
This plate was painted by Jacques François Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines after an illustration by Dominique Vivant Denon. The designed was overseen by the manufacture director Adolphe-Theodore Brongniart. Porcelain painted in enamels and gilded. The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. |
