Title
Plate 8: Machine aérostatique
Description
Inscribed: "Machine Aérostatique de 70 Pieds de hauteur sur 46 de Diamètre, qui s’est élevé à Paris, avec deux homme à la hauteur de 324 Pieds le 19. Oct, 1783." On October 19, 1783, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier (1754-1785) and André Giroud de Villette (1752-1787) made the first tethered balloon flight with two human passengers. The balloon—the largest and most solidly constructed by the Montgolfier brothers to date—was again assembled in the spacious park of the suburban Paris wallpaper factory of Jean-Baptiste Réveillon (1725-1811). Four days earlier, Pilâtre de Rozier had made the first solo tethered ascent in the same balloon.
