Summary

[edit]
Description While best known as the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty in NY Harbor, many critics believe that Bartholdi's monumental cemetery sculpture was his most important work and the one in which he clearly broke from classical styles to develop his own artistic vision. On the upper register, the dead move toward a central gateway -- a gateway to whatever comes after death. There is no obvious religious theme. Below, a young woman/angel spreads her arms out in a protective gesture above the bodies of a dead couple.
