English: Plaques on the wall of the old Grammar School - Cowbridge The blue plaque provides a potted history of the school, the other commemorates the life and death of Alun Lewis - author and war poet, more information of whom can be found here:
http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/S/soldier_poets/biog_lewis.html. Lewis died as one of the 'forgotten army' of Burma, a theatre of war that was largely overshadowed by events in other parts of the world during the period. The Grammar School was founded by Sir Leoline Jenkins in 1608 and, as indicated on the blue plaque, belonged to and had close links with Jesus College, Oxford. It took boarders and day boys, another of whom was the actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. The old school buildings are located in Church Street, Cowbridge and were derelict for some years before being converted into residential accommodation. The school also occupied part of Old Hall that is now an adult education centre. The school was closed in 1974 to be replaced, as were so many others, by a comprehensive school. |
