English: Plaque to Dr James Lind, (1716-94) A native of Edinburgh James Lind, after service in the Royal Navy as Surgeon's Mate, studied medicine at Edinburgh University and upon qualifying became physician at the naval hospital at Gosport. In 1753 he published his highly significant book, 'A Treatise of the Scurvy'. Through his tireless efforts in 1795 the Admiralty eventually ordered that lime juice should be supplied. All seamen, down to the present day, ought to honour his memory.
This plaque is in the courtyard of the former medical school at Edinburgh University. |
