Summary
[edit]DescriptionPlaque on the HMS Conway Anchor - geograph.org.uk - 273383.jpg |
English: Plaque on the HMS Conway Anchor The plaque explains that this 5 ton anchor came from the HMS Conway which was lost in the Swillies whirlpool SH5571 in 1953. I remember being taken to see the broken backed ship which had been grounded near the Menai Bridge. The ship had been launched in 1839 as the HMS Nile. After being decommissioned in 1875 it was moved to Liverpool as a training ship and renamed HMS Conway. In 1941, to avoid the attention of the Luftwaffe, it was moved to the Menai Straits. In 1953 it was being towed back to the Mersey for refurbishment when it met its tragic end. |
