ANCHOR OF THE RYDAL HALL
On the night of October 17, 1876,
the square-rigger Rydal Hall, en
route from Cardiff, Wales, to
San Francisco with a cargo of
coal, ran on the rocks in a heavy
fog off Pillar Point and was lost.
Ninety-five years later this
anchor, fourteen feet long and
weighing two tons, was recovered
from the sea[,] a reminder of more
than 85 sailing ships wrecked on
the San Mateo County coastside in
the last half of the nineteenth
century.
