| Description |
English: Plaque in Capbreton (Landes, France) in memory of a US bomber B-24 shot down after a mission over Germany during WWII, on march 27 1944. The text is : On march 27th-1944, a US bomber B-24 back from a mission was shot down by german anti-aircraft artillery in front of Capbreton. Disappeared in the crash : Lt Richard E. Perleman (Pennsylvania), Lt Melvin J. Johnson (Utah), Lt William E. Cobane (Michigan), Sgt Donald A. Lawyer (Pennsylvania), Sgt Fred D. Wood (Virginia). Was killed in this action : Lt Paul E. Baum (Ohio). 4 surviving soldiers were rescued by local sailors. They suffered and died for our liberty. The survivors were captured by german once ashore.
Français : Plaque à Capbreton (Landes) en mémoire d'un bombardier US B-24 abattu au retour d'une mission sur la base aérienne de Mont-de-Marsan pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, le 27/3/1944. Touché par la flak peu après le bombardement, il avait essayé de rejoindre l'Espagne, mais volant trop bas, il fut abattu par l'artillerie cotière de Capbreton. Les 4 survivants recueillis par les pêcheurs capbretonnais furent faits prisonniers par les allemands à leur arrivée à terre. |
