Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The former Plank Road House at 5997 Salamanca Sugartown Road (corner Humphrey Road) in Great Valley, New York, as seen in April 2022. Built about 1838, this was originally a hotel and way station for travellers along the old Ellicottville-Great Valley Plank Road, one of the first improved overland routes through Cattaraugus County. It also served for a time as the village post office under the supervision of postmaster Frederick Cramer. Architecturally, it's a fine example of the influence that the Greek Revival wielded on American vernacular design of the early 19th century: notice the careful symmetry of the façade, the gable returns on the side elevation, and particularly the Classical detailing (pediment and Doric columns) on the full-width front porch. It's currently the home of a bed & breakfast inn, the Evergreen Tea Room and Guest House.
