Summary
[edit]DescriptionPlane tree beside Bridgham Lane - geograph.org.uk - 1710504.jpg |
English: Plane tree beside Bridgham Lane. Plane trees are natives of the northern hemisphere, and the sole members of the family Platanaceae > 774867. They grow up to 50 metres tall and can be found in wet habitats. Plane trees are pollinated by the wind, with male and female flowers growing on the same plant. After pollination the female flowers transform into so-called achenes that aggregate on ball-shaped appendages of 2.5 to 4 cm in diameter. They are covered by stiff bristly fibres which help to disperse the fruits. Mature tree bark peels off easily and produces a mottled appearance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platanus |
