Description
English: Plan of Lucknow and surrounding country: taken from the most authentic sources

Military map of the city of Lucknow, capital of the Indian State of Oudh, 270 miles southeast of Delhi, with some miltary features defined. At the start of the Great Mutiny in May 1857, 1700 English and Indian troops fortified the British Residency in Lucknow. The English population took shelter here when a mutineer force attacked on 1st July. On September 25, a force of 3,000 men under the command of Sir Henry Havelock and Sir James Outram fought their way into the Residency following their trek from Cawnpoor [i.e. Kanpur]. This garrison under Sir Havelock held out against 60,000 rebels until Colin Campbell arrived with his relief force in November. This map displays Campbell's advance on Lucknow to relieve the besieged community over the period 13-17 November 1857. Further, the inset shows British troop movements between Lucknow, Cawnpoor, Futterpoor and Allahabad between June and November 1857, that is, the movement of Havelock and Campbell's troops. Relief in the form of ground cover is shown by shading.
