RUPIA. SYPHILIS. 575 and its medical men advise vulgarization of a knowledge of this sub-ject as the only means of counteracting the tremendous evils of igno-rance. No space need be given here to the history or origin of syphilis as adisease. It dates back of recorded history, and it would take much lessspace to name the nations, if any, which may have escaped it than ofthose which have long suffered. Races as well as individuals seem toacquire some immunity through experience. Those of Asia and Europebear it far better than did the aborigines of Hawaii, among whom it wasintroduced by Capt. Cooks sailors one hundred years ago, with veryfatal results and great reduction in population—much the same resultas when measles is first disseminated among Pacific islanders who areunaccustomed to its presence. It is rather fruitless to speculate as to whether the disease may begenerated anew under the conditions of recklessness, excess and all un-cleanness, where it is so generally distributed
