d.Among his canvases were a Pietd, an Adoration of theChild, — both very dark, — a Coronation of the Vir-gin, of heroic size and very impressive, a weird Christbearing the Cross, clad in a white satin robe, and aninjured group of St. Paul with four other saints. A few other schools were represented, by severalstriking works: a miniature procession on wood byMantegna, of extraordinary tinting, a wonderfulpanel of the Madonna and two infants by Francia,a damaged Madonna by the same, two of Moronissuperb portraits, a lovely angels head by TimoteoViti (?), a magnificent Adoration of the Child byLorenzo Lotto, gorgeously colored and finished, aninteresting Bearing of the Cross by the rare MarcoPalmesano da Forli, an Ecce Homo by Gian Bellini,and finally, a marvelous little work of Raphaels,representing the half-figure of Christ, showing at aglance how far he surpassed all others in lifelikemoulding, golden flesh work, and nameless grace.
