it was naughtbut the squeak of a mouse in the wall; the ghosts weremice, and nothing more.— But, I took care not tospend another night in such a prison. After an early breakfast I entered the fortress uponits northerft side, where a later brick bridge crosses themoat, and the lofty wall is broken down for some dis-tance. To the west from the bridge, the fosse has atthis place more than its usual garniture of grassyslopes with shrubs and flowers, for hence extends uponthe outer bank a fine row of giant plane trees, andbeneath them, a pleasant shady promenade beside thesilent water. On the evening previous I had walkedhere for a while, and encountered, in the darknesspierced only by twinkling caffe-lights across the piazza,quite a number of coupled lovers, strolling in signifi-cant silence and contiguity.
