Description
English: Clifton & Co.

Mumbai Bombay c. 1903 Collotype Undivided back 13.00x8.70cm

One of the most popular views of plague camps in Bombay at the turn of the century, here with a nicely positioned stamp. Postmarked June 30, 1906, Mumbai. Addressed to “Miss Amy L. Carter Graylingwell Hospital, Chichester, Sussex, England” with ink blind stamp on back “Chas. [Charles] A. E. Huard, Marble Hall, Byculla, Bombay.” [Recto] “This is the place Segregation Camp, what do you think of it. C.A.E. Huard, 30.6.06”

As one resident at the time confessed, “Bombay was a trading city; knowledge of the plague would hurt trade... The representation that all was well was critical” (India Old and New, p. 279). Postcards helped in this effort.
