August, 1896, 85,500,000 hadbeen taken out on Eldorado and Bonanza Creeks. Overhalf of the output was kept at the mines for use in businessoperations, gold dust being the only circulating medium inuse there. At least 81,000,000 more would have beenbrought out in the fall had not the Yukon River becomelower than ever before known in August, preventing theriver boats from making their final trips to the diggings. As the gold is too heavy to bring out overland, it was keptat the diggings until spring. 2 PLACER MINING. For richness of the ground the Klondike has seldom beenequaled in the history of gold mining. Single claims pro-duced $150,000 and $200,000 during the winter of 1896, andin the spring the owners declared they had-worked onlysmall corners of their mines. Single pans of dirt (2 shovel-fuls) yielded $800 and $1,000, and pans containing $300 to$500 were not uncommon. The most authentic news obtainable places the prospec-tive output of gold between December, 1897, and July, 1898,

DAWSON CITY. at $20,000,000. It is predicted by conservative men whoreturned from the Klondike in October, 1897, that the steam-ers which reach Puget Sound next July will bring down$15,000,000 to $17,000,000, or about 40 tons of gold dust andnuggets. Dr. Dawson, of the Canadian Government, after whom PLACER MINING. 3 Dawson City, the center of the recent gold discoveries, isnamed, states that he considers the Yukon destined to bethe greatest mining country the world ever saw. He antici-pates that the recent discoveries will lead to the develop-ment of quartz mining, in which is the staple wealth of anymining country. Experienced prospectors have alreadymade a number of valuable gold quartz discoveries in theYukon district, and many more are sure to follow. Inspector Strickland, of the Yukon mounted police, inspeaking of the Klondike discoveries, says: There has been no exaggeration. I have seen nothingin newspapers in regard to the richness of the field that isnot true. Great strikes
