English: “Pizze alla napoletana” (Neaplolitan pizza) – Article in the Roman newspaper Il Bersagliere of 19th June 1880, giving an account of Giovanni Brandi, owner of several Neapolitan pizzerias, who claims to have been invited to make pizzas (then a peasant food) for Queen Margherita of Italy and crown prince Victor Emmanuel.
(This is almost a decade earlier than the date given on the counterfeit document made out to Raffaele Esposito (Brandi’s son in law), which is still often cited as the origin of the Pizza Margherita. Compare Zachary Novak: Folklore, Fakelore, History: The Origins of the Pizza Margherita.) |
