| Description |
English: Pitalkhora Caves is one of the oldest Buddhist Caves located at 20.3137° N, 74.9925° E. The caves are in Kannad taluka of Aurangabad district of Maharashtra(India). Pitalkhora caves are located at northern side of kannad munciple Council nearly 15 Km from taluka place and 75 Km from the city of Aurangabad. These caves were carved approximately in 300 BC. These caves are not fully carved and half rock cut structures. The rock type is deccan basalt having low quality of texture than Ajantha and Verul Caves. It has been observed that some man made destructions at the caves. The caves are located at western ghats. The mountains range those are perpendicularly to western ghat moving western to estern side. At the location there are 14 caves we can see clearly, some are developed and some are underdeveloped.The Caves equipped with some rock cut water tanks for readily available water to the monks.The caves now under the jurisdiction of Maharashtra State Archeological Department and Forest Department of Maharashtra. |
