Summary
[edit]DescriptionPit cave (moonscape near Owl's Hole Cave, San Salvador Island, Bahamas) 1 (16255794718).jpg |
Pit cave near Owl's Hole Cave, southwestern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas. Pit caves are vertically-oriented, subcylindrical, vadose dissolutional features - they are enlarged solution tubes (see elsewhere in this photo album). At the locality shown above, pit caves descend vertically for 5 to 10 meters and have irregularly subcircular plan-view shapes. Sediment fill occurs at the bottom of the pits. During rain events, water is quickly delivered down to the water table via these pit caves (there are no streams or rivers on the island). The surface limestones here are part of the Grotto Beach Formation (lower Upper Pleistocene). |
