Summary
[edit]DescriptionPit (former limestone quarrying) - geograph.org.uk - 1402832.jpg |
English: Pit (former limestone quarrying). Behind the large boulders in the right-hand side of the image, a roughly rectangular pit can be made out. This is just part of much longer pit, one of two that run roughly W-E along the northern slopes of the Hill of Standing Stones. For a view in the opposite direction along the same pit, see 1493689.
They seem to be relics of small-scale industry: they coincide with lines of limestone outcrops (the remaining boulders are of limestone), and are evidently the result of quarrying. The rock would have been burned in lime-kilns to produce lime for agricultural use; see 1410024 (and compare the nearby 1202847 – cornstone is a kind of limestone). In the background, the most distant hills, at the extreme left, are the Campsies; also visible to the left of centre, although a little closer, is Auchineden Hill: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/40323 |
