Notes

Browning Model 1903 semi-automatic pistol Presentation piece to Major PB Greenhough, Auckland Garrison Artillery , and marked Wm H Hazard, Auckland. Greenhough, a member of the Auckland Garrison Artillery Territorial Unit enlisted for service with the NZEF in November 1914, and this piece may have been presented to him at that time. When Percy enlisted, 16 November 1914, his rank was listed as Major, but four days later this was reduced to Lieutenant, and at the time of his discharge from the NZEF his rank was that of Captain. Wm Hazard = gunsmith and vendor, Queen Street, Auckland Designer- John Moses Browning (1855-1926). Weapons to his design manufactured by Remington, Winchester, Colt and the Fabrique National d’Armes de Guerre of Herstal, Liege, Belgium - products of last being only ones to carry the Browning name. Browning 1903- originally produced in 9mm Browning Long calibre; used a new construction in which the barrel was attached to the pistol frame by the ribs beneath the chamber; this allowed the pistol to be dismantled very easily by pulling back the slide and rotating the barrel to free the ribs.
