Summary
[edit]DescriptionPiscina, Markenfield Hall Chapel - geograph.org.uk - 804845.jpg |
English: Piscina, Markenfield Hall Chapel The 14th century piscina on the south wall of the chapel has been restored to its former glory after centuries of being obscured under many layers of limewash. The Markenfield coat of arms is carved at the bottom. In this chapel Sir Thomas Markenfield and a group of supporters gathered for mass on November 20th 1569 before setting out for London on what became known as the 'Rising of the North' against Queen Elizabeth's protestant state. The rising was ruthlessly put down and Sir Thomas was forced to flee into exile in the Netherlands where he died in poverty, which was preferable to being hung, drawn and quartered for treason. |
