Pirie Street - showing Adelaide Gymnasium
Description

This image taken in 1918 shows business premises in Pirie Street, Adelaide between Wyatt and Chesser Streets. The large building in the forefront is the Adelaide Gymnasium and Orthopaedic Institution, operated by Hugo Leschen. A well known identity in his day, he taught physical culture to thousands of school children and adults. (Chronicle, 30 October 1926, p22) Adjacent businesses are Gerard and Goodman, electrical importers, G E Holliday, boot maker and repairer, the A.B.C Printing Works (unsigned), Slatters Ltd, shoe importers, and Macrow and Sons, manufacturer of furniture and other goods.

Large painted advertisements on buildings can be seen for Threlfall and Cook, Tailors (on the left), and Arab Self-Raising Flour and Viceroy Tea.
