Italiano: Pantheon, o sia Tempio di Giove Ultore, consistente in una magnifica Cella, ed in un maestoso Pronao, come si dimostra nella predetta Tav. XIV, alla figura II. Egli fu fabbricato da M. Agrippa, come apparisce dalla seguente iscrizione scolpita sul fregio del medesimo Pronao, notato nella detta figura colla lettera A.
M. AGRIPPA. L. F. COS. TERTIVM. FECIT Fu poscia ristorato dagli imperadori Settimio Severo, e Caracalla, come apparisce dalla consecutiva iscrizione che si legge nelle fasce dell’Architrave del medesimo Pronao, notato colla lettera B. IMP. CAESAR. SEPTIMIVS. SEVERVS. PIVS. PERTINAX. ARABIC. ADIABENIC PARTIIIC. PONTIF. MAX. TRIB. POT. XI. COS. III. P. P. PROCOS. ET. IMP. CAES. MARCVS. AVRELIVS. ANTONINVS. PIVS. FELIX. AVG. TRIB. POT. V. COS. PROCOS. PANTHEVM. VETVSTATE. CORRVPTVM. CVM. OMNI. CVLTV. RESTITVERVNT. Questo, secondo la relazione degli antichi scrittori, era un Tempio de’ più splendidi , ed è l’unico monumento dell’antica magnificenza che sia rimaso illeso nelle sue parti principali. I di lui muri sono di una portentosa grossezza, fabbricati di opera incerta e fermati ogni quattro palmi con un letto di tevoloni, resi vieppiù stabili da un’arcuata costruzione parimente di tevoloni, dimostrata nella detta figura, alla lett. C, ed investiti nell’esterno di tevolozza triangolare. Il Pronao poi ha sedici gravi colonne di granito orientale di smisurata grossezza. Era anticamente coperto con travi e tegole di bronzo, le quali furon tolte al tempo di Urbano VIII, e fatte rifondere per formarne la Confessione de’SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo nella Basilica Vaticana, sendo stato supplito in di loro vece con travi di legno, e con tegole laterizie. Nel timpano del di lui frontespizio segnato colla lettera D sono quantità di buchi, ne’quali s’internavano de’ perni impiombati per sostegno d’un bassorilievo parimente di bronzo. Cfr.
