Summary
[edit]DescriptionPipingScheme.jpg |
English: 1. Water flows trough the sand layer under the dike and well up behind the dike. A well is formed.
2: The water flowing under the dike transports sand. This sand is deposited on land behind the dike and forms a sand boil. A pipe is formed, the length of the pipe depends on the waterlevel difference between river level and waterlevel inland 3: At a certain length of the pipe the erosion increases progressively because of decrease of hydraulic resistance, this is due to the fact that the length of the pipe increases. 4: When a connection is formed with the river, the flow increases and transports more sand. Caveties may be formed under the dike, causing subsidence of the crest and leading eventually to dike breaching.
