Summary

[edit]
Description

One of many pingo scars near Halfway Run, Union County, within the Halfway Run Natural Area of Bald Eagle State Forest.

The scars are water-filled depressions, or ponds, that formed during the last ice age when subsurface ice rose up through the permafrost and melted as the climate warmed.

Shown here is a scar that has filled in with muck, sphagnum moss, and grassy hummocks. A narrow fringe of forest, growing on a low rampart, encircles the scar. Several other scars, similarly vegetated, are nearby. No trails traverse the area; bushwhacking through the wetlands was challenging (but enjoyable nonetheless).
