English: Pinckney Marcius-Simons, Stones of Venice, painted after July 17, 1902 and before January, 1905, private collection, 80 x 112 cm. Auctioned June 17, 2021.[1] The painting records the scene in Venice after the collapse of the Campanille on July 14, 1902. "The painting is taken from the Basilica, from the Gallery of Horses; and at the foot of the chipped Royal Palace, what was the tower of Saint-Marc is no more than a sand dune, while behind also dusts all the gold of the setting sun. The title, marvelously evocative in its conciseness, is borrowed from Ruskin's book: Stones of Venice... 'Les Pierres de Venise' become the dust of centuries scattered to the winds." Gustave Soulier, "Les Peintres de Venise," L’Art Décoratif, Janvier-Juin, 1905, p. 62.[2] |
