Title
Pin/Needle
Description
English: Incomplete cast perforated pin or decorated needle probably of Roman date. The decoration on the piece is confined to the head and consists of a small knobbed tip above a conical swirl. The perforation is at an angle of between 15 and 20 degrees from horizontal to the axis of the shaft. The sides around the perforation are somewhat squared. The piece thins slightly beneath the perforation, before expanding at another incised swirl. There is a low waist marking the beginning of the plain shaft. The shaft tapers gently to an ancient break. This would appear to be an unusual example, stylistically it sits comfortably with Roman period examples, however, it may be judged crudely decorated for a pin and a perforation would be rather unusual. Equally, It would be rather elaborately decorated for a needle.
