English: Pillow lava of the Chenaillet ophiolite in Hautes-Alpes department, France.
Français : Une ophiolithe comme ici celle du Chenaillet est un morceau de lithosphère océanique charriée sur le continent. Ici c’est la partie la plus superficielle de la croûte qui apparait : Ce sont les basaltes en pillow-lavas (ou en coussin) qui se sont formés avec la mise en contact de lave basaltique chaude avec l’eau de l’océan très froide. La présence de ces pillow-lavas témoigne de l’origine sous-marine de la formation du Chenaillet. Ici la tectonique a redressé la structure d’origine permettant de voir ainsi une grande surface de ces laves en coussin. Ce site situé à l’est de l’arrête principal du Chenaillet est l’une des plus belle formation de ce type en France et même en Europe bien qu’elle soit peu mise en valeur sur le terrain. |
