Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pillbox on Mill Hill, Stathern Overlooking the Vale of Belvoir this is a type FW3/22 pillbox constructed in 1940 or 1941, the second most common pillbox type with 1209 recorded as being still standing. These were built in Britain as part of the World War II defences against German invasion. The type 22 design is hexagonal, with an internal anti-ricochet wall and loopholes for five light machine guns and one rifle. Originally designed to have 15 inch bulletproof walls many were built with 42 inch thick shellproof walls. The internal measurement is usually around 10 feet. Many of the type 22 pillboxes are quite crudely built and this one is described as being in "bad" condition on the Council for British Archaeology web site.
