| Description |
English: Pillbox in Woodland Gardens This was at the northern end of the old Blackpool Municipal Airport, opened in 1931, but closed 1936 when Squires Gate opened at the southern end of Blackpool. It reopened in 1939 as Stanley Park Aerodrome, being requisitioned as an RAF parachute training centre. Later Wellington bombers were assembled and flown here. Aircraft used it as a base for searching the Atlantic for submarines, and a night fighter squadron was based here. It was from here Amy Johnston flew, delivering an aircraft to London, when she ran into difficulties near the Thames estuary.
