Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Picture of bridge ascribed to Bishop Wardlaw, founder of St. Andrew's University. In 1419 a supplication by him for an indulgence to help towards REBUILDING a bridge to the west of the town failed to mention the needs of pilgrims, emphasising instead the necessity of safeguarding the passage of students to the burgh. The pilgrim business was drying up. However, armorial marks and style of the bridge suggest the authority of subsequent Bishops - Kennedy and the two Beatons.

This route to St. Andrews was significant from Roman times and as the link to Balmerino and Arbroath Abbeys to the north also as a drove road.
