Deutsch: Der Name des Bildes bezieht sich auf die am Galgen sitzende Elster, die Klatsch und damit Verrat verkörpert. Zu Bruegels Zeiten ging die spanische Herrschaft der Niederlande gegen die neue evangelische Lehre vor – deren Anhänger mussten mit dem Tod am Galgen rechnen. Dieser Galgen ist allerdings eine sogenannte unmögliche Figur: Die beiden Stützen stehen nebeneinander, während der Querbalken von vorne nach hinten verläuft. Das niederländische Sprichwort unter dem Galgen tanzen bedeutet: „Die Gefahr nicht sehen oder verachten“. In der linken unteren Ecke verrichtet ein Mann seine Notdurft, dies bezieht sich auf: an den Galgen scheißen, es ist bewusste Missachtung von Tod und Obrigkeit. |
