English: Portrait painting of Pierre Elliott Trudeau (1919-2000), former prime minister of Canada (1968–79 and 1980–84). A charismatic and controversial figure, Pierre Trudeau was arguably Canada’s best-known politician, both at home and abroad. His government negotiated Canada’s constitutional independence from Britain and established a new Canadian Constitution with a Charter of Rights and Freedoms. His political acumen helped maintain national unity over the Quebec sovereignty movement.
Trudeau pioneered official bilingualism and multiculturalism, fostering a pan-Canadian identity. Trudeau's foreign policy included making Canada more independent; He formed close ties with the Soviet Union, China, and Cuban leader Fidel Castro, putting him at odds with other capitalist Western nations. Trudeau's personality and policy decisions aroused polarizing reactions throughout Canada during his time in office.
