Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pied kingfishers (Ceryle rudis) are easily recognizable by their black and white plumage. They have a black crown and mask across their eyes, contrasting with a white throat, breast, belly, and underparts. Their wings are also black and white striped. They are typically found near freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakeshores, and marshes. The Kazinga Channel, connecting Lake George and Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth National Park, provides an ideal habitat with abundant fish populations.

Pied Kingfishers primarily feed on fish, which they capture by hovering over the water or by diving headfirst from a perch. They are skilled hunters and can adjust their hunting techniques based on the water conditions and prey availability. Their long, dagger-like bills are adapted for catching and gripping fish. They have a streamlined body and strong wings, which enable them to perform agile aerial manoeuvres while hunting.

Pied Kingfishers excavate tunnels in earthen banks or termite mounds to build their nests. Both males and females participate in nest building and care for the young. They may raise multiple broods in a breeding season. These kingfishers are often seen perched prominently near water bodies, where they scan for prey. They are known for their characteristic hovering flight before diving into the water to catch fish.
