At the diiiblution, this abbey was fur-rendered ( 92 ) rendered mto the kings hands by MargaretVernon, its abbefs, and the convent in 1538,at which time it was vakied, according toDiigdale, at two hundred and eighteen poundsfour ilnUings and two pence halfpenny clearincome : at that period it came to Cranmer,Archbifliop of Canterbury, then to Sir HenryBrooke, &c.; and, about the time of the Re-floration, to the family of the Honeywoods,whofe defcendant, Mr. Frazer Honeywood,banker of London, has, within a few years,almoft rebuilt the abbey-houfe as a familyrefidence, in the gothic ftyle, leaving how-ever many of the ancient buildings and officesllanding : part of the houfe appears in theannexed view. By fome veftiges ftill remaining, we findthat the abbey confifted of two quadrangles,with cloif^ers, and a fpacious hall. The remain of Ley borne Caflle, in thisvicinage, though now merely a farm-houfe,and greatly in decay, is yet an ohjeft worthyof the pencil j and, even from its prefentappearance, pahifuUy recalls to the mindits wafted honours and loft- importance. Allthat exifts of this caftle, is the ftone workof the chief entrance, with a great part ofthe circular towers on each fide, and a fewfragments of arches and walls : the tracesof the ditch which furrounded it, are alfoftill vifible. Over the gate appears to have been amachicolation, or contrivance, from whenceftones, boiling water, or melted lead, mightbe poured down on the heads of the be- fiegers, ( 94 ) fiegers.
