| Transcript | Whitby Abbey was founded by St. Hilda in A.D. 566 for the occupation of nun and monks. The " Sainted John of Beverley " was amongst its famous inhabitants as was also the poet Caedmon, who died about 680. The building was destroyed by the Danes about A.D. 870, and remained a ruin until it was rebuilt by William de Percy, one of the Conqueror's barons. The Abbey stands on a bare plateau 200 feet about sea level. |
