This family fill a large space in the history of thecountry. The great Brian (Boru) became king of all Ireland. Donald OBrien obtained his kingdomof Thomond under Henry III., by paying tribute; but Edward I. granted it (1275) to Thomas de Clare,son of the Earl of Gloucester,who headed a formidable forceto support his claim.
