s of new work as it was found necessary to introduce, arecarefully copied from the original designs, but a very considerable portion of theancient structure still remains visible, or has been simply recased where the stonehad suffered from the effects of either fire or water—the accidents or neglect ofcenturies. Within the close or boundary once stood the palace of the archbishop,the houses of the dean, and other dignitaries, which were in a state of decayand desolation until the work of renovation, Avhich was superintended by Mr.Guinness himself. It was reopened for public worship on the 24th February,1865, in presence of the lord lieutenant, the Episcopal archbishop, and an immenseassembly of distinguished citizens. The public fully appreciated the munificenceof Mr. Guinness. The Queen, with universal approbation, soon after createdhim a baronet. He was unanimously returned to Parliament as one of the citymembers, and when he died, the same honor was conferred upon his eldest son.

Besides the interest which attaches to St. Patricks Cathe-dral as the finest and most complete specimen of mediseval architecture remain-ing in Ireland, it is connected with some grand historical ceremonies, some ofwhich have been noticed : and some of the monuments in it will prove attractiveto visitors as long as it exists. Here, beneath two simple marble slabs, rest theremains of Dean Swift and Mrs. Hester Johnston, known as Stella. A bustof the great dean, which stands close by, was the gift of J. S. Faulkner, nephewand successor of Alderman John Faulkner, the original publisher of most ofSwifts works. It is said to be a striking likeness. There is a tablet to Alex-ander McGee, servant to the dean, erected by his grateful master in memoryof his discretion, fidelity, and diligence in that humble station.
