The Dargle is the great resource of picnic-parties from DubHn, for whose comfort Viscount Powerscourt has kindly pro-vided tables and seats. The ravine itself is of great depth and about a mile inlength, winding among precipitous cliffs and rocks, clothed with overhangingtrees and brush, assuming all sorts of fantastic forms, and luxuriantly covered with foliage. Here barren rocksJi^-iM . jut out over moss-covered slopes ; and there gnarled bran-ches of venerable trees hangover the stream and reachacross it. The foliage some-times makes a perfect curtainshutting out the water, whichis thus often unseen, but heardfretting and foaming throughthe bowlders far below, whichsometimes form narrow gorges.On one side the mass of thickfoliage rising upward from thebrink of the river has called tomind Miltons line, Verdurous walls of Paradise upraised, while on the other hand thecharacter of some portions ofthe gle
