Note: The above dressings (taken from ^ The AnglersDiary j are given in full detail, as they are useful flies on allthe salmon rivers described in tliis guide. Brown-trout flies. The Following patterns are recommendedfor wet-fly fishing, and are placed in their order of merit : Claretand Partridge, Claret and Grouse, Claret and Mallard, Claret andTeal, Rough Golden Olive, March Brown, Black and Teal, Blueand Blea, Blue Spider. The biggest of the brown-trout are takenin the evening and after dark; but some very good fish—and notinfrequently one of the very big ones—fall in daytime to the dry-fly fished after the orthodox manner. The best size of dry-fly isNo. 1 hook (new scale). Killing patterns are : Rough Olive, PinkWickham, Ordinary Wickham, Golden Sedge, March Brown, RedOuill and Black Gnat.
