d is situated on Pearl street at the head of Church. Itwas erected in 1816. The First Church (Congregational) is a brick structure ofclassic form with hexa.style portico, and ionic columns, sur-mounted by a cupola copied from the choragic monument of Lysic-rates. Both exterior and interior details are modeled from cla.ssic.structures. The Methodist church, next south of the above, is a finestone structure in the Gothic style. The College street Congregational church is on the corner ofCollege and vSouth Union .streets. It is built of local stone in theGothic .style. St. Pauls church (Protestant Epi.scopal), a fine stone Gothicstructure, is .situated on St. Paul and Bank .streets, with its hand-some .stone chapel and rectory fronting on the latter. The Fir.st Bapti.sh church is a large wooden Gothic buildingon St. Paul .street between College and Bank. The Berean Baptist church, an offshoot from the First Bapti.st,is a wooden .structure on the corner of Pearl street and Winooskiavenue.

The Episcopal resi-dences of both theProtestant and RomanCatholic dioce.ses of\ermont, are in Burl-ington, that of theRoman Catholic bishopbeing on Cherry street,and that of the Protest-ant Episcopal bishop onRock Point near theEpiscopal Institute.The Young Mens Christian Association of Burling-ton, was organized on Ma\- 25, 1S66, with a membershipof twelve. In 1S70 a free reading room and a library wereopened in rented rooms, but these were discontinued on theopening of the Fletcher Free Librar)-, and the books presented
