-cracker-faced old crone looked down upon us, a fit study for aMurillo, with her deep wrinkles, and sinewy arms foldedlazily, a glorious bit of colour, from the deep orange foldsof the cloth about her head to the brown skin and the fieryeyes, and one wandering old tooth which rested on thelower lip: a very uncanny old woman, who might havehad a broomstick hidden under her bed! Nevertheless,E. made a drawing of her, and held it up for inspection,and the poor old soul nodded approval, which made uscharitably believe she might have a conscience; and thenwe turned the old pump into a studio, but so many modelsoffered, it was difficult to satisfy them all.
