d lightness inthe air that was very pleasant, and a delicious sense ofcoming summer. At night we slept at the hotel above the Falls ofSchaffhausen, feeling a little as though it were all adream. We were evidently the first arrivals of the season,and the great empty house looked rather dreary. Some-body must be the first arrival everywhere, so we madethe best of it; and surely the most crabbed of mortalsmight well have been content, as, looking from the openwindow, the whole wonderful scene burst upon theview; the great green river, falling in one mighty massover the rocks, lashing itself into a white fury, as itplunged and roared and struggled down the rapids, andthen lying panting and still for a moment before itswept away again behind the hills. We saw it in asetting of softest tints of golden green from the woodedslopes and the garden beneath us, where a great Judas-tree threw its purple blossoms across the flow ot theemerald water.
