omuch of the sentiment is suggested oftentimes by a few brief words, and solittle is to be found that is not necessary to the progress of the tale, that it isdifficult to abbreviate it—impossible to give it in apter language, even inthe form of prose. The tale is one of humble rural life; the incidents arefew ; the actors only four—indeed, we may say but three. Farmer Allan hasa son William, and a niece Dora—the child of a brother who parted from himin anger, and died in foreign lands. Allan reared the girl, and she was fair tolook on, and thrifty ; and the old man, as he looked at them, would say tohimself, Ill make them man and wife. Doras heart yearned towardsWilliam, but he thought not of her. Then upon a day Allan called William and said to him— My son :1 married late, but I would wish to seeMy grandchild on my knees before I die :And I have set my heart upon a match. Then he told him how he had reared Dora, and had longed for years tosee them married. But William said—
