New-ton may be brieflytold: It was set offfrom Cambridge in1688, and constituted,with the BrightonDistrict, the territoryof the Newe Townebeyond the stockade,on the south side ofthe Charles River.The town became acity in 1875. The cityis divided into four-teen distinct villages:Newton, ChestnutHill, Newtonville,Nonantum (or NorthVillage), West New-ton, Auburndale, Riverside, Waban, Newton Lower Falls, New^tonUpper Falls, Newton Highlands, Eliot, Newton Centre, and OakHill. The Boston and Albany main line passes through thecity; the Newton Circuit (branch of the B. and A.), withfourteen stations, traverses three sides; southern portions aretouched by the Midland Division of the New York, New Havenand Hartford Railroad, and electric lines pass through its terri-tory, from village to village, and to adjoining places. iY C. B WEBSTER. ECHO BRIDGE, NEWTON UPPER FALLS. lock Gorge Reservation, of the Metropolitan Parks System,is in Newton Upper Falls. Echo Bridge, which carries theaqueduct of the Cochitnate Water System, has a span of nearly150 feet across a rocky gorge through the Charles River ranges. Norumbega Park is reached via the Newton cars. It has anattractive zoo, a deer park, restaurant, electric fountain,rustic theatre, etc. Thousands are drawn to it in the summer,because of the delightful trolley ride, as well as the attractionsof the place. Norumbega Tower, erected by Professor Horsfordto commemorate the settlement of the Norsemen, is on the westbank of the Charles, a little off the road to Waltham.
