-place of the ancestors of George Washington inBrington, England. Portraits of sixteen governors have been ar-ranged upon the walls. The ceiling of the passageway in the rear of Doric Hall con-tains a skylight with Liberty in the centre, surrounded by thenames of the republics of Hellas, Helvetia, Fh^rence, Venice,Genoa, Iceland, Holland, Andorra, San Marine) and Rome. Atone side is the seal of Mattachusets Bay in Nova Anglia; atthe other that of Plimouth Nov Anglia. The large bronzecase contains the colors which were carried by Massachusettssoldiers in the Spanish war, and returned to the custody of theState. Nearly in the centre of the building is Memorial Hall. Sixteenpillars of Sienna marble support the circular gallery. The domeis surrounded by a heavy bronze cornice environed by the eaglesof the Republic, and above them, in cathedral glass, is the crestof the Commonwealth, encircled, within laurel wreaths, by theseals of the other twelve original States. In other arched recesses may be seen busts ofgovernors. The north and south panels are to contain paintingsby Henry O. Walker, one entitled The Pilgrims on the May-flower, the other John Eliot preaching to the Indians. Thepaintings for the east and west panels are by Edward Simmons.They are entitled respectively Concord Bridge, April 19, 1775,and The Return of the Colors to the Custody of the Common-wealth, December 22, 1865. Passing out of Memorial Hall and ascending the main stair-case, the visitor will notice a stained glass window, containingreproductions of the various official seals of Massachusetts.
