English: Printing plate for the printer of the w:IBM 421 tabulating machine This object has various components assembled on a steel plate. On the lower side of the plate there are three gear wheels, the central one connected with the two side wheels; each of the sides is coaxial with other gear wheels and a cam disc. In the central part of the device there are four relays; from these some electric wires depart ending on a connector present in the terminal part of the device. Inside the device there is a system of levers held in position by springs and controlled by the four relays.
The unit was used within the IBM 421 tabulator.
The IBM 421 tabulator was launched on the market in 1950, in addition to the functions of a "classic" tabulation, it was also able to perform multiplications and divisions; it has a speed of 100 cards per minute in listing operations (printing of the data of the cards read), and 150 cards per minute in the operations of tabulation (calculation and printing of only partial and general totals).File history
