Description |
English: A U.S. Navy Piasecki HRP-2 Rescuer at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland (USA), circa in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The first HRP-2 flew on 10 November 1948. The five HRP-2 built were a mental-skinned variant of the HRP-1. Although referred to officially as the HRP, or "Harp", the helicopter's distinctive shape, with no protruding nose beyond the forward rotor's axis (on the HRP-1), soon earned it the nickname "The Flying Banana". In the background is a Piasecki XHJP-1 Retriever (BuNo 37977). This was the second of two XHJP prototypes, the first of which first flew in March 1948. Production examples were redesignated HUP. |
