Summary
[edit]DescriptionPhytoplankton bloom off southeastern Australia (MODIS 2015-12-26).jpg |
English: A bright blotch of electric blue stained the waters off southeastern Australia in mid-December 2015. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASAs Terra satellite captured this true-color image on December 16.
The color marks the location of a summer phytoplankton bloom, a common phenomenon in these waters. Phytoplankton are small, plant-like organisms that form the basis of the marine food chain. Areas that support phytoplankton growth are often also excellent fisheries. The Bass Strait, the location of the bloom, supports both sport and commercial harvest of a number of species, from scallops to sharks. |
